A Day on the Water Turns Tragic
On May 8, 1993, Daniel Schalles and his companion, Tony Myers, embarked on a skiff trip near the east end of Gravina Island, close to Ketchikan, Alaska. What was intended to be a routine outing turned tragic when their skiff encountered trouble, leading to their disappearance. Despite extensive search efforts, neither man was ever found, and they are presumed to have drowned.
The Search Efforts
Following the report of their disappearance, search and rescue teams launched an extensive operation to locate Schalles and Myers. The search encompassed the surrounding waters and shoreline of Gravina Island, utilizing boats, helicopters, and ground teams.
