On January 17, 2020, 81-year-old Margaret "Helen" Becker embarked on what appeared to be a typical day in Sebring, Florida. Known affectionately as Helen, she was last seen at a Publix supermarket on U.S. 27 South at approximately 6:17 p.m., purchasing bananas. Earlier that day, she had visited a nearby CVS pharmacy around 4:30 p.m. Witnesses noted that Helen seemed slightly confused during these interactions, though she had no formal diagnosis of dementia.
Helen was driving a blue 2018 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck with Ohio license plate HOB 214. After her disappearance, both she and her vehicle were reported missing. The Highlands County Sheriff's Office initiated a search, but initial efforts yielded no significant leads. The lack of activity on her cell phone and the inability to track her vehicle's OnStar system further complicated the investigation.
Two weeks after Helen's disappearance, a tip led investigators to the Avon Park Bombing Range. Surveillance footage revealed a vehicle matching Helen's truck entering the range on the night she vanished. On February 1, 2020, dive teams located her submerged truck in the Kissimmee River, approximately 30 yards from a boat ramp. The vehicle was found in drive with three windows rolled down, suggesting it was occupied when it entered the water. However, Helen was not found inside.
Despite extensive searches of the river and surrounding areas, only personal items from Helen's vehicle were recovered. Authorities have not found evidence of foul play but believe the circumstances suggest she may be deceased. The community and Helen's family have expressed deep concern and a desire for closure. Her husband of over 42 years and her stepdaughter have been vocal in seeking information that could lead to understanding what happened....Read More
