A Journey Fueled by Hope
In June 2018, 25-year-old Axel Domingo Talavera Muñoz left his hometown of Estelí, Nicaragua, with dreams of a better life in the United States. Like many migrants, he sought to provide for his family, including his two young children, by pursuing opportunities unavailable in his homeland. His journey led him through Mexico, aiming to cross into the U.S. near McAllen, Texas. On July 29, 2018, Axel contacted his family, informing them he was attempting to circumvent the Falfurrias Border Patrol checkpoint, a route known for its perilous conditions.
The Last Known Moments
Axel's final communication with his family indicated he had successfully crossed the Rio Grande and was navigating the harsh terrain of the Texas desert. Shortly thereafter, members of his travel group were apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents. These individuals reported that Axel had fallen ill during the journey and was left behind by the smuggler, commonly referred to as a "coyote."
