A Day at the Park Turns Tragic
On May 23, 2019, four-year-old Owen Lee Jones was enjoying a day at Riley Park in Delphi, Indiana, with family and friends. The park, a popular spot for local families, is situated along Deer Creek, a waterway that had become swollen and swift due to recent heavy rains. Around 6 p.m., while playing near the creek's edge, Owen was seen entering the water. Witnesses reported that he began to struggle against the strong current before being swept away downstream.
Immediate Search Efforts
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene. Indiana Conservation Officers, along with local police and fire departments, initiated a comprehensive search operation. Utilizing boats, drones, sonar equipment, and even an airboat, crews scoured Deer Creek and its surroundings. Despite their efforts, the search was hampered by high water levels, strong currents, and poor visibility due to muddy conditions.
