On March 5, 2001, Douglas Rowe, a 48-year-old fisherman from Dillingham, Alaska, embarked on what was expected to be a routine fishing expedition aboard the F/V Amber Dawn. The vessel, navigating the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea, was located approximately six miles north of Atka Island when disaster struck. The Amber Dawn sank under circumstances that remain unclear, leading to a frantic rescue operation. Out of the five crew members on board, three were rescued.
