A Routine Voyage Turns Tragic
On February 10, 1991, the 98-foot steel crab fishing vessel Barbarossa vanished in the Bering Sea, approximately 30 miles west of St. George Island. Among the six crew members aboard was 36-year-old Darrell Gross, a seasoned fisherman from Dillingham, Alaska. The vessel's disappearance remains one of the many maritime mysteries that haunt the treacherous waters of Alaska.

In the early hours of that fateful day, the U.S. Coast Guard received a distress call from the Barbarossa around 1:00 AM.
