Angela Ungaiak Chingliak was a 31-year-old Alaska Native woman from Goodnews Bay, a small village on the western coast of Alaska. Born on December 25, 1980, she was known in her community for her warmth and resilience. Angela was part of a tight-knit population where subsistence living and strong family ties are central to daily life. Her disappearance in 2012 left a lasting void in both her family and the broader community.
On September 7, 2012, Angela was aboard a small boat with two other residents of Goodnews Bay—Sam Pavala, 49, and Richard Ross, 57. The vessel was navigating the waters near the mouth of Goodnews Bay, an area known for unpredictable weather and hazardous sea conditions. Tragically, the boat capsized, leading to a fatal accident. Pavala and Ross were pulled from the water but were pronounced dead at the local clinic despite resuscitation efforts. Angela, however, was never found and remains missing to this day .
Following the accident, search and rescue operations were initiated to locate Angela. Despite extensive efforts, including community involvement and official search teams, no trace of her was ever recovered. Given the circumstances and the treacherous nature of the local waters, it is presumed that Angela drowned . The lack of closure has been a source of enduring pain for her family and community.
Angela's case is documented in various official records. She is listed in the Alaska Department of Public Safety’s Missing Persons Clearinghouse, which aims to provide current and accurate information on missing individuals across the state . Additionally, her case appears in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) under the number MP63957 . These records serve as a testament to the ongoing efforts to acknowledge and remember those who have disappeared under tragic circumstances....Read More
