On June 30, 2020, Brett Michael Akers, a 28-year-old man from Chesapeake, Virginia, was admitted against his will to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital following a suicide attempt. He had inflicted cuts on his neck, which were bandaged upon his admission. Akers suffered from mental illness and was in need of medical attention.
The following day, July 1, 2020, Akers left the hospital without permission. Police located him later that day and returned him to the hospital. However, he left again without authorization.
Surveillance footage captured Akers near Fort Norfolk Plaza, turning right toward the Elizabeth River Trail, around 4:30 p.m. on July 1, 2020. He was last seen wearing blue surgical scrubs, yellow socks, and no shoes. His blue scrub top was later found in a nearby parking garage. Akers had a full beard and stitches on his neck and arm at the time.
In the days following his disappearance, Akers's family and local authorities conducted extensive searches in the Norfolk area.
