In September 2019, 23-year-old Aidan Teague Dungan relocated from Kauaʻi to Maui, seeking a fresh start. He moved into a sober living facility in Wailuku, situated across from a Shell gas station. Aidan had been managing schizoaffective disorder and had a history of substance abuse. Despite these challenges, he maintained regular contact with his family, often speaking with them daily.
On the morning of November 7, 2019, Aidan spoke with his father, mentioning plans to get a haircut and assuring him that everything was fine. Later that evening, around 9 p.m., he vanished from the sober living facility. He left behind all his belongings except for his phone, which rang for two days before going straight to voicemail.
In early December 2019, Aidan's father discovered his son's silver 2006 Scion xB parked at a private residence just a few blocks from the sober living facility. The resident initially claimed that Aidan had left the car there, stating he was leaving for Europe. However, he later changed his story, asserting he found the car at the beach and brought it home for safekeeping. Aidan's mother expressed skepticism about this account, noting that her son lacked a valid passport and the means to travel abroad.
