A Quiet Day Turns Tragic
On October 3, 1997, 67-year-old Glenn Wade, a seasoned pilot and longtime resident of Soldotna, Alaska, vanished under mysterious circumstances. Wade, known for his regular flights between his home and his cabin on Caribou Island, embarked on what seemed to be a routine journey in his blue PA-22 floatplane . Later that day, the aircraft was discovered nose-down and partially submerged in Skilak Lake, a remote and deep glacial lake on the Kenai Peninsula. Despite extensive search efforts, neither Wade nor his plane has been recovered, leaving a void in the hearts of his family and the community.
The Fateful Discovery
Around 5:20 p.m. on the day of Wade's disappearance, a pilot flying over Skilak Lake spotted the upturned floatplane. The aircraft was located approximately half a mile off Caribou Island, an area familiar to Wade. Local residents, upon learning of the sighting, attempted to tow the plane to shore using a private boat. However, the effort inadvertently accelerated the sinking of the aircraft, nearly pulling the assisting boat under before the tow line was cut.
