A Nighttime Voyage Turns Tragic

On the early morning of May 27, 2018, 21-year-old Sofia McKenna and her friend, 20-year-old Spencer Mugford, embarked on a late-night adventure from the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus in Groton. Utilizing a 14-foot sailboat without a mast, they aimed to reach the New London Ledge Lighthouse, situated about a mile offshore.

Digital Footprints and Distress Signals

Around 2:00 a.m., Spencer's Snapchat account featured images of Sofia smiling at the lighthouse. Shortly after, between 2:05 and 2:09 a.m., seven calls were made from Spencer's phone to Sofia's mother's number.
