On November 23, 2009, Russell Yoshida, a 53-year-old resident of Waialua, Hawaii, embarked on a solo kayak fishing trip off the coast near Kaiaka Bay. Known for his experience and familiarity with the local waters, Yoshida set out around 3 p.m., aiming to catch oio (bonefish) for an upcoming gathering at the nearby Puuiki Pavilion. However, when he failed to return by evening, concern grew among his friends and family. His car was later found parked at Kaimanu Place, but there was no sign of Yoshida himself.
The Honolulu Fire Department initiated a search operation, deploying helicopters, boats, and scuba divers to comb the area. Despite their efforts, only a few personal items were recovered near the shore, including his fishing rod, bailer, and drinking bottle. Notably, his 10-foot kayak was never found, adding to the mystery of his disappearance.
The U.S. Coast Guard joined the search, conducting 17 different search sorties by surface and air assets over a three-day period. They covered an area stretching from Kaena to Kahuku Points on Oahu's North Shore and even parts of the Kauai Channel. Despite these extensive efforts, no additional clues were found. The search was officially suspended on November 26, 2009, pending any further developments.
Yoshida's disappearance deeply affected the local community. Friends, family members, and fellow Jehovah's Witnesses joined the search efforts, scouring the coastline and waters in hopes of finding any trace of him. Josh Dela Cruz, a close friend, flew in from Maui to assist in the search, highlighting the strong bonds Yoshida had formed within his community. ...Read More
