Dayne Kawika Ortiz, an 18-year-old senior at Farrington High School in Honolulu, was known for his athleticism, dedication, and vibrant personality. As a defensive back on the varsity football team, he had become one of the most improved players under Coach Randall Okimoto's guidance. His commitment to the sport and his teammates was evident, and he was poised to make significant strides both on and off the field.
On November 2, 2013, Dayne joined his family for a fishing trip at Mokuleia Beach, near the Mokuleia Polo Fields in Waialua, Hawaii. While kayaking approximately 100 yards from shore, he encountered rough waters that caused his kayak to capsize. Despite immediate search efforts, Dayne disappeared beneath the waves and was not seen again. Later that evening, his empty kayak washed ashore, and in the following days, two pieces of his board shorts were recovered by divers.
The search for Dayne was extensive, covering more than 720 square miles of ocean. Rescue crews, including divers and aerial teams, scoured the area in hopes of finding any sign of him. Despite these efforts, no further evidence was uncovered, and Dayne was presumed to have drowned.
The news of Dayne's disappearance sent shockwaves through the Farrington High School community and beyond. Teammates, classmates, and friends gathered to support one another, sharing memories and offering prayers for his safe return. Coach Okimoto and the football team visited Mokuleia Beach to pay their respects and stand in solidarity with Dayne's family. ...Read More
