In mid-July 2023, the Shiels family embarked on a journey from their home in Charleston, South Carolina, to the serene community of Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. Their purpose was to reconnect with loved ones and partake in a local barbecue. However, the unforeseen wrath of nature transformed this familial visit into an unimaginable tragedy.
The Devastating Flash Flood
On July 15, 2023, a sudden and severe thunderstorm unleashed nearly seven inches of rain within a mere 45 minutes over Upper Makefield Township. This deluge led to a catastrophic flash flood, causing Houghs Creek to overflow and inundate Washington Crossing Road. The Shiels' vehicle, along with several others, was engulfed by the rapidly rising waters. In the chaos, 32-year-old mother Katie Seley and her two youngest children, 2-year-old Matilda "Mattie" and 9-month-old Conrad, were swept away.
