In mid-July 2023, the Shiels family embarked on a journey from their home in Charleston, South Carolina, to the serene community of Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania. Their purpose was to reconnect with loved ones and partake in a local barbecue. However, the unforeseen wrath of nature transformed this familial visit into an unimaginable tragedy.

The Devastating Flash Flood

On July 15, 2023, a sudden and severe thunderstorm unleashed nearly seven inches of rain within a mere 45 minutes over Upper Makefield Township. This deluge led to a catastrophic flash flood, causing Houghs Creek to overflow and inundate Washington Crossing Road. The Shiels' vehicle, along with several others, was engulfed by the rapidly rising waters.
