On December 6, 2017, Hermann Samitsch, a 78-year-old experienced sailor, departed from Boot Key Harbor in Marathon, Florida, aboard his 39-foot 1972 Pearson sailboat. His destination was Panama, where he intended to visit family before Christmas. Despite his age, Samitsch was known for his maritime skills and had a history of sailing. However, this voyage was fraught with challenges from the outset. His sailboat had a malfunctioning engine and minimal navigation equipment, making the journey particularly perilous.
Samitsch's plan was to sail solo to Panama, a journey that would have taken him through open waters and potentially unpredictable weather conditions. After his departure, there were no further communications or sightings reported. He never arrived at his intended destination, and concerns grew as days turned into weeks without any word. The lack of communication and the known issues with his vessel raised alarms among his family and authorities.
Upon realizing that Samitsch had not arrived in Panama, his family reported him missing to both Panamanian and U.S. authorities. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office in Florida took the lead in the investigation. Despite efforts to locate him, including checks with maritime agencies and alerts to vessels in the area, no trace of Samitsch or his sailboat was found. The case remains open, with authorities classifying it as a lost/injured missing person case.
Interestingly, this was not the first time Samitsch had encountered issues at sea. In 2011, he was arrested in Monroe County, Florida, for abandoning a vessel. This prior incident highlights a history of maritime challenges, though it's unclear how it may have influenced his final voyage. ...Read More
