Dennis Henry DePue was born on June 13, 1943, in Sturgis, Michigan. He graduated from Burr Oak High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in business from Michigan State University. DePue worked as a property assessor for the State of Michigan's Department of Treasury. In 1971, he married Marilynn, a high school guidance counselor in Coldwater, Michigan. The couple had three children and appeared to lead a typical Midwestern family life. However, beneath the surface, tensions simmered as Dennis became increasingly controlling and withdrawn, leading Marilynn to confide in friends about her unhappiness and desire for a divorce .

After 18 years of marriage, Marilynn filed for divorce in 1989, citing Dennis's controlling behavior and emotional abuse. The divorce was finalized in December of that year.
