In March 2020, the quiet community of Weitchpec, California, nestled within Humboldt County, was shaken by the sudden disappearance of 52-year-old Virgil Owen Bussell Jr. Known affectionately by his nicknames "Uppity" and "Buscat," Bussell was a respected member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. On March 25, his family reported him missing after discovering his truck abandoned on Deerhorn Road, a remote area southeast of Weitchpec. The vehicle was found with a full load of freshly cut firewood, keys in the ignition, windows rolled down, and his jacket on the passenger seat—an unusual scene that immediately raised concerns among his loved ones .
Upon receiving the missing person report, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) initiated a search operation. Deputies, along with the Sheriff's Special Services Unit, the Search and Rescue Posse, and the Hoopa Volunteer Fire Department, conducted extensive ground searches in the rugged and densely vegetated terrain surrounding the area where Bussell's truck was found. Despite these efforts, no trace of Bussell was uncovered .
As days turned into weeks with no significant leads, Bussell's family grew increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress. His daughter, Alicia Audelo, expressed concerns over the diminishing involvement of law enforcement in the search efforts. Determined to find her father, she took matters into her own hands by organizing independent searches and raising funds to hire professional trackers and even a helicopter for aerial searches. Audelo also reported receiving a disturbing ransom message from an anonymous individual claiming to have abducted her father, demanding $7,000 for his release. She believed the message was a cruel scam, but it added to the family's anguish .
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Hoopa Valley Tribe stepped in to support the search for Bussell. In May 2020, the tribe offered a $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his disappearance. Tribal Chairman Byron Nelson Jr. emphasized the community's commitment to assisting in the search, stating that the tribe is "one big family" and will do everything possible to help ....Read More
