In the summer of 1984, 13-year-old Kelly Jean Harris traveled from her home in Pasadena, Maryland, to Jackson, Michigan, to spend time with her mother, Carol Hugall, and stepfather, Leonard Hugall. Kelly was a vibrant, biracial teenager who loved Michael Jackson, the color purple, and playing with her younger sister, Kristen. She was preparing for a significant change, planning to move to California to live with her great-aunt and attend school there .
On August 10, 1984, Kelly was last seen riding her red three-speed bicycle near her family's home on Lincoln Court. She was upset that day because her parents wouldn't allow her to attend the county fair. When her mother returned home from work that afternoon, Kelly was gone. Her bicycle was later found abandoned at the entrance to Ella Sharp Park, a location some distance from her home .
Initially, authorities treated Kelly's disappearance as a runaway case, partly due to her recent argument with her parents and reports that she had purchased a bus ticket to Detroit and was seen boarding a bus . This assumption delayed critical early investigative efforts. However, her family, particularly her mother, insisted that Kelly would not have run away and suspected foul play from the beginning.
Leonard Hugall, Kelly's stepfather, quickly became a person of interest. He had a documented history of violent behavior and child molestation predating his marriage to Carol .
