Early Life and Troubled Beginnings
Ken Rex McElroy was born on June 1, 1934, in Overland Park, Kansas, as the fifteenth of sixteen children to Tony and Mabel McElroy, a poor, migrant tenant-farming couple. The family moved between Kansas and the Ozarks before settling outside of Skidmore, Missouri. McElroy dropped out of school at the age of 15 in the eighth grade and quickly established a local reputation as a cattle rustler, small-time thief, and womanizer.
Escalation into a Life of Crime
Over the years, McElroy's criminal activities escalated, and he was accused of numerous felonies, including assault, child molestation, statutory rape, arson, animal cruelty, hog and cattle rustling, and burglary.
