A Promising Future Interrupted

On October 19, 2014, the life of 18-year-old Alexandra Imani Burgos was tragically cut short in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Alexandra, affectionately known as Alex, was a freshman at Wilbur Wright College with aspirations of becoming a social worker to assist underprivileged children. Her commitment to helping others was evident through her employment at a YMCA in Niles and her previous role as a recreational leader with the Chicago Park District.

The Fateful Night

On that ill-fated evening, Alexandra had gone to pick up her younger brother from his girlfriend's apartment located in the 5300 block of West Oakdale Avenue. While standing in the kitchen of the first-floor apartment, shots were fired outside, and stray bullets penetrated the window, striking Alexandra in the head and arm.
