A Joyful Evening Turns Tragic
On August 7, 2011, six-year-old Arianna Gibson was enjoying a neighborhood block party in Chicago's Englewood community. The festivities extended into the night, and Arianna, filled with the innocent excitement of childhood, begged her grandmother to let her stay over. That evening, she fell asleep on the living room couch of her grandmother's home, surrounded by family and friends. The warmth of the gathering was shattered in the early hours when gunfire erupted, forever altering the lives of those present.
The Unthinkable Attack
At approximately 6 a.m., an unidentified assailant approached the residence on South Sangamon Street and fired multiple shots through a window. Arianna, still asleep on the couch, was struck in the chest and leg. Two 17-year-olds—a boy and a girl—were also wounded in the attack. Despite being rushed to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, Arianna succumbed to her injuries about an hour later.
