Discovery of the Crime Scene
On Friday, October 22, 1999, the lifeless body of 40-year-old Tita Marie Murray was found on the banks of a wooded area in the 4800 block of First Street, SW, Washington, D.C. The serene surroundings of the area starkly contrasted with the grim discovery, sending shockwaves through the local community. The circumstances of her death were immediately deemed suspicious, prompting a homicide investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Investigation and Public Appeal
In the aftermath of the discovery, the MPD's Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch took charge of the investigation. Recognizing the challenges inherent in solving such cases, the department reached out to the public for assistance. They urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Command Information Center at (202) 727-9099 or email unsolved.murder@dc.gov.
