A Fateful Night in West Lawn
On February 13, 2016, the West Lawn neighborhood on Chicago's Southwest Side was shaken by a tragic incident. Shortly after 2 a.m., 23-year-old Vicente Avila and two other men were seated in a vehicle in the 6800 block of South Lawndale Avenue when occupants of another vehicle opened fire on them. The assailants fled the scene, leaving the victims to seek medical assistance on their own. The three men managed to reach Holy Cross Hospital and were later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital for further treatment. Tragically, Vicente Avila, who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m. The other victims, aged 25 and 22, suffered injuries to the neck and shoulders but survived the attack.
