A Promising Young Life Cut Short
On March 4, 2016, the city of Indianapolis was shaken by the tragic death of 18-year-old Tyren Dion Whitley. Born on March 24, 1997, Tyren was the eldest of eight children, a role model to his siblings, and a beloved son to his parents, Jacquline Whitley and Lamont Taylor. He worked diligently as a dishwasher at Park Tudor School and harbored aspirations of becoming an entrepreneur or welder. His untimely death not only robbed his family of a cherished member but also deprived the community of a young man with immense potential.
The incident occurred in the 3200 block of North Gladstone Avenue, near the intersection with East 32nd Street. Responding to reports of shots fired, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) discovered Tyren lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his back. He was immediately transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.
