A Tragic Disappearance

On July 21, 1960, the small community of Alamogordo, New Mexico, was shaken by the sudden abduction of 4-year-old Sharon Lee Gallegos. While playing with her cousins in an alley behind her grandmother's house, Sharon was approached by a man and a woman in a dark green sedan. Despite her refusal, the woman forcibly dragged Sharon into the vehicle, which then sped away. Witnesses described the abductors as a fair, thin man with sandy hair and a heavyset woman in her 30s with dirty blonde hair. This brazen daylight kidnapping left the Gallegos family and the entire community in a state of shock and despair.

Discovery in the Desert

Ten days later, on July 31, 1960, a schoolteacher from Las Vegas, Nevada, searching for rocks in the desert near Congress, Arizona, made a grim discovery. He stumbled upon the partially buried and burned body of a young girl in the Sand Wash Creek area. The child's remains were found approximately 500 miles from where Sharon had been abducted.
