On October 14, 1997, at approximately 2:30 A.M., the tranquility of West Point, California, was shattered by the sound of gunshots. Residents along Winton Road, a secluded area known for its dense forestry and winding paths, alerted the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office to the disturbance. Shortly thereafter, reports of a fire in the same vicinity intensified the urgency of the situation.
Discovery of a Grisly Scene
Deputies promptly responded to the scene, where they were confronted with a harrowing sight: a burning Jeep Cherokee with a man's body lying approximately four feet away. The deceased was later identified as 52-year-old Roy Dixon, a resident of Modesto. Dixon had embarked on a solo trip the previous evening, informing his wife of 31 years that he planned to return in a couple of days.
