Discovery of the Crime Scene
On the evening of July 14, 2000, San Diego police officers responded to a welfare check at 3411 Ashford Street. Concerned neighbors reported that they had not seen the resident, 59-year-old Robert Edward Belton, for several days. Upon forcibly entering the residence, officers discovered Belton's lifeless body inside. He had been brutally beaten to death with a blunt object.
Investigation and Missing Vehicle
During the initial investigation, authorities noted that Belton's 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck was missing from his home. This raised suspicions that the vehicle might have been used by the perpetrator to flee the scene or could provide crucial evidence.
