A Tragic Night on East Colfax Avenue
On October 1, 2016, at approximately 2:00 AM, Denver Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 500 block of East Colfax Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 34-year-old Rene Wells suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in front of a 7-Eleven convenience store near Pearl Street. Despite being transported to Denver Health Medical Center, Wells succumbed to his injuries on October 6, 2016.
A Mother's Heartbreak
The news of Wells' death devastated his family, particularly his mother, Debra Dorsey, and sister, Destini Decker. Dorsey recounted the harrowing experience of waiting eight hours for confirmation of her son's identity. Detectives eventually identified Wells by a distinctive "Mama's boy" tattoo on his neck—a testament to his close bond with his mother.
