In the early hours of February 9, 2013, the vibrant nightlife of downtown Santa Cruz was shattered by a tragic event. At approximately 12:30 a.m., 32-year-old Pauly Silva was standing near the Locust Street entrance of The Red Room, a popular bar frequented by locals and students alike. Without warning, gunfire erupted, and Silva was struck multiple times, succumbing to his injuries at the scene. A second individual was grazed by a bullet but managed to flee, leaving the community in shock and mourning the loss of a beloved member.
A Life Dedicated to Martial Arts and Family
Pauly Silva was more than just a familiar face in Santa Cruz; he was a dedicated father of two and a respected mixed martial arts instructor. Teaching at Kaijin Mixed Martial Arts on the Westside, Silva was known for his passion and commitment to his students. Friends and colleagues remember him as a positive influence, with one stating, "It's a terrible loss for the community and he also has a baby and that's the part that makes this so much worse."
