A Community Leader's Tragic End
On December 12, 2016, the Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago was shaken by the tragic loss of 49-year-old Lawrence Matchem. Known for his unwavering commitment to mentoring youth and advocating against gun violence, Matchem was fatally shot while shoveling snow on the 400 block of East 40th Street. This senseless act not only robbed his family of a beloved father and brother but also deprived the community of a dedicated activist.
The Circumstances Surrounding the Crime
On that fateful evening, after a heavy snowfall, Matchem was performing maintenance duties, clearing pathways for local residents. During this act of service, an unidentified assailant approached him, demanded his belongings, and then callously shot him in the head. The perpetrator fled, leaving Matchem lifeless in the snow.
