Discovery of the Crime Scene
In the early hours of December 16, 2016, Chicago police officers responded to a distress call reporting a person down in the Lawndale neighborhood on the city's West Side. Upon arrival at approximately 1:07 a.m., they discovered 30-year-old Lavaris Johnson lying unresponsive in the 1600 block of South Millard Avenue. Johnson had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:28 a.m. The circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear, and no immediate witnesses came forward to provide information about the incident.

The Lawndale community, already grappling with issues of violence and crime, was further shaken by Johnson's murder.
