Discovery of the Body
On September 19, 1992, the Altamonte Mall in Altamonte Springs, Florida, became the unexpected scene of a grim discovery. Shoppers and mall employees were alarmed when authorities revealed that a blue Mercedes parked in the mall's lot contained the partially decomposed body of Joseph David Stout. Stout, a resident of Winter Garden, had been reported missing days earlier. The condition of his remains suggested he had been deceased for several days, and a gunshot wound to the head was identified as the cause of death.
The Crime Scene and Initial Investigation
The state of decomposition indicated that Stout's death had occurred several days prior to the discovery of his body. Investigators quickly surmised that the murder likely did not take place at the Altamonte Mall but that the location was used to dispose of the vehicle and conceal the crime.
