Jenny Lin, a 14-year-old prodigy from Castro Valley, California, was on the cusp of numerous milestones in May 1994. As a straight-A student and the principal violist in her school orchestra, she was eagerly anticipating her upcoming graduation from Canyon Middle School, where she was slated to be valedictorian. Beyond academics, Jenny had a passion for marine biology and was set to attend the Academic Talent Development Program that summer. Her future was undeniably bright, making the events of May 27, 1994, all the more tragic.
The Day That Shattered a Community
On that fateful day, Jenny returned home from school around 2:45 p.m. She made a few phone calls to friends, the last of which ended around 5:15 p.m. When her father, John Lin, arrived home at 6:45 p.m., he found the house eerily quiet. The television was on, the sliding back door was unlocked, but there was no sign of Jenny downstairs.
