On October 22, 2009, the Back of the Yards neighborhood in Chicago was shaken by the tragic death of 17-year-old Gamaliel "Gama" Toscano. A sophomore at Tilden Career Academy, Toscano was known among his peers and teachers as a dedicated student with aspirations for a brighter future. His untimely death not only robbed his family of a beloved member but also deprived the community of a young man poised to make a positive impact.
The Fateful Afternoon
That Thursday afternoon seemed like any other. Toscano had just finished his classes and was walking home, a routine he had followed countless times. However, as he reached the 1100 block of West 47th Street around 2:45 p.m., tragedy struck. Toscano was shot multiple times, collapsing on the sidewalk where he was later pronounced dead.
