A Devoted Life Cut Short

Father Benjamin J. Carrier, a 54-year-old Catholic priest from San Diego, was known for his unwavering dedication to helping those in need. Serving as a chaplain at the University of San Diego's Our Lady of Light Roman Catholic Church, he also taught biology and was a 1959 alumnus of the university. His commitment extended beyond academia; he was deeply involved in drug abuse counseling and the rehabilitation of former prison inmates. In 1981, his selfless efforts were recognized with the Bishop Buddy Award, honoring his outstanding contributions to his community and the university.

A Fateful Journey to Yuma

On November 8, 1982, Father Carrier embarked on a trip that would tragically be his last. He checked into the El Rancho Motel in Yuma, Arizona, at 3 p.m., possibly en route to a meeting in El Centro, California, or to visit friends in Yuma. Witnesses observed him with two unidentified men during his stay. The motel clerk noted a man in his truck during check-in, described as between 20 to 25 years old, approximately 5'6" tall, with a medium build and light facial hair.
