Father Benjamin J. Carrier, a 54-year-old Catholic priest from San Diego, was known for his unwavering dedication to helping those in need. Serving as a chaplain at the University of San Diego's Our Lady of Light Roman Catholic Church, he also taught biology and was a 1959 alumnus of the university. His commitment extended beyond academia; he was deeply involved in drug abuse counseling and the rehabilitation of former prison inmates. A Fateful Journey to Yuma

On November 8, 1982, Father Carrier embarked on a trip that would tragically be his last. He checked into the El Rancho Motel in Yuma, Arizona, at 3 p.m., possibly en route to a meeting in El Centro, California, or to visit friends in Yuma. Witnesses observed him with two unidentified men during his stay.
