A Life Cut Short in West Oakland
On January 4, 2017, the city of Oakland was shaken by its first homicide of the year. Devonte Malik Thomas, a 21-year-old resident, was fatally shot near the intersection of 16th and Myrtle streets in West Oakland. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m., and Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with no arrests made and the motive still under investigation.
