On the night of February 1, 2014, the West Oakland community was shaken by a tragic event that claimed the life of 15-year-old Denzel "Bean" Jones. Denzel, a teenager with a bright future ahead, was standing outside the Boys & Girls Club near 24th and Market Street around 10:45 PM when an unknown assailant approached and opened fire. A Double Homicide Leaves a Community Grieving
The shooting that night was particularly devastating, as it resulted in the deaths of both Denzel and his 35-year-old relative, Kanem Ayers.
