Discovery of the Body
On November 14, 2014, the lifeless body of 37-year-old Damaris Rainwater Hawes was discovered in a parking garage near Georgia State University in Atlanta. She was found inside a sleeping bag on the first level of the AAA parking garage at Kimball Way and Decatur Street. Authorities noted that Hawes had suffered apparent blunt force trauma to the head, indicating a violent assault.

Hawes was a mother of five children. At the time of her death, she was experiencing homelessness, a circumstance that added layers of vulnerability to her situation.
