Kelly was a vibrant young woman, married with a four-year-old daughter. She had completed high school a year early and was preparing to attend Blue Ridge Community College in the fall. To support her family and future educational endeavors, she worked at the Imperial Gas Station on South Main Street in Harrisonburg. This station, located about a mile south of the James Madison University campus, was a solitary establishment on an otherwise isolated stretch of road.
