A Tragic Evening in Brighton Park

On the evening of September 15, 2017, the Brighton Park neighborhood of Chicago was shaken by a horrific act of violence. At approximately 8:35 p.m., residents were startled by a barrage of gunfire near the 4700 block of South Fairfield Avenue. Responding to multiple 911 calls, Chicago police officers arrived to find a gruesome scene: a bullet-riddled sedan containing four victims, all fatally shot. Among them were brothers Joel Sandoval, 24, and Miguel Sandoval, 27; their friend, 21-year-old Michelle Adrian Cano; and 28-year-old Ida Arvizu, who was seven months pregnant at the time.

The Victims: Lives Cut Short

The lives lost that evening represented a cross-section of the community, each with their own stories and aspirations. Joel and Miguel Sandoval were known in the neighborhood, with family and friends mourning their untimely deaths. Michelle Adrian Cano, affectionately known as "Kano," was a young man with his future ahead of him. The most heart-wrenching loss was that of Ida Arvizu.
