A Night of Tragedy at Cesar Chavez Park
On the night of August 30, 2016, the tranquility of Oakland's Fruitvale district was shattered by a heinous act of violence. At approximately 11 p.m., 28-year-old Augustine Vigil and 47-year-old Shawn Chatman were found fatally shot at Cesar Chavez Park, located near Foothill Boulevard and Harrington Avenue. Both men, residents of Oakland, were pronounced dead at the scene. The community was left in shock, grappling with the sudden loss of two of its members.
A Family's Heartbreak
Augustine Vigil, a young father of four and an alumnus of Skyline High School, was known for his deep love for his children and family. His sister, Celaniz Vigil, expressed the family's devastation, highlighting the void left by his untimely death. The pain was exacerbated by the brutal nature of the crime, as both Vigil and Chatman were reportedly executed at point-blank range while on their knees.
