A Noble Birth Amidst Turmoil
Beatrice Cenci was born on February 6, 1577, into the prominent Cenci family of Rome. Her father, Count Francesco Cenci, was known for his violent and immoral behavior, often clashing with papal authorities. After the death of her mother, Ersilia Santacroce, in 1584, Beatrice and her sister Antonina were placed in the Santa Croce a Montecitorio convent. They returned to the family home in 1592, where Beatrice faced increasing abuse from her father.
The Cenci family resided in the Palazzo Cenci in Rome's Regola district and owned the La Rocca castle in Petrella Salto. Francesco's second marriage to Lucrezia Petroni did little to stabilize the household, and tensions escalated as Beatrice and her siblings suffered under their father's tyranny.
