A Fateful Sailing Trip

On June 4, 2009, a group of six friends embarked on an evening sailing excursion in Chuckanut Bay near Bellingham, Washington. Among them were Sean Allen "Donnkie" Mansfield, a 29-year-old student at Bellingham Technical College, and 35-year-old local artist Gunther Frank, who owned the 18-foot sailboat. As night fell, an unexpected windstorm struck, causing the vessel to capsize and throwing all occupants into the frigid 48-degree waters. While four of the friends managed to reach safety, Mansfield and Frank remained missing despite extensive search efforts by the Coast Guard and local authorities.
