Gunther Jose Frank, born on May 12, 1974, in Oak Harbor, Washington, was a dedicated photographer renowned for his dynamic and immersive style. After graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 1992, he pursued higher education at Western Washington University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Settling in Bellingham, Frank became a prominent figure in the local arts scene, capturing the essence of the community through his lens. His work often graced various publications, reflecting his commitment to portraying the vibrancy of Bellingham's music and cultural events.

The Fateful Night on Bellingham Bay

On the evening of June 4, 2009, Frank embarked on a sailing trip with five friends—three men and three women—aboard his 18-foot sailboat. The group set out for a sunset sail to Chuckanut Island, a favored route among local sailors. As they made their return journey, unexpected and severe winds, with gusts reaching 40-50 mph, struck near Clark's Point, causing the vessel to capsize in the frigid waters of Bellingham Bay.
