Early Life and Education
Michael Joseph Swango was born on October 21, 1954, in Tacoma, Washington, and raised in Quincy, Illinois. He was the middle child of Muriel and John Virgil Swango. His father, a career U.S. Army officer and Vietnam War veteran, struggled with alcoholism upon returning from service. Swango excelled academically, graduating as valedictorian from Quincy Catholic Boys High School in 1972. He later attended Quincy College, earning summa cum laude honors in chemistry and biology in 1979. His academic achievements led to a full scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU).
Troubling Signs During Medical Training
During his tenure at SIU, Swango's behavior raised concerns among peers and faculty. He displayed an unusual fascination with dying patients and often prioritized working as a paramedic over his studies. Classmates noted his penchant for collecting newspaper clippings about violent deaths and disasters.
