A Life Ended at Twenty-One

Bryan Lewis was only 21 years old when he was shot and killed inside his family’s Louisville, Kentucky, home during the early morning hours of October 20, 2012. The shooting occurred at a residence in south Louisville near Taylor Boulevard and Bicknell Avenue, a place where Bryan and his relatives should have been able to feel safe. Instead, the home became the scene of a violent and deeply personal tragedy that has remained unsolved for more than a decade. No publicly identified suspect has been arrested, and Bryan’s family has continued to live with unanswered questions about who came to the house, why the gunman targeted it and whether the killer intended to murder Bryan at all.

Gunshots in the Early Morning

Bryan’s mother, Rhonda Mars, was sleeping in another room when the attack began. According to accounts she later gave to Louisville news organizations, she awoke at approximately 2 a.m. after hearing her son and the eruption of gunfire. One account states that she heard Bryan scream the word “no” shortly before multiple shots were fired. When she reached the front portion of the house, she found him on the floor near the door. He had been shot several times and could not be saved. The suddenness of the attack left little time for anyone inside the residence to understand what was happening or intervene.
