In late October 2005, 36-year-old surfer Dustin Gabel returned to Oahu after an exhilarating surf trip across Singapore and Japan. On Tuesday, October 25, around 2:30 p.m., a city lifeguard observed Gabel paddling out into the bay, heading toward the rugged and remote Kaena Point.
