On July 8, 2003, the tight-knit community of Arcadia, Florida, was shaken by the tragic death of 17-year-old John Welles. Born and raised in Arcadia, John was a vibrant high school student known for his love of the outdoors, including fishing and hunting. He was an active member of the Fort Ogden Methodist Church and had aspirations of joining the Coast Guard after graduation. His untimely death left family, friends, and neighbors searching for answers.
The Day of Disappearance
The events leading up to John's death began innocuously. He visited a local Walmart for shopping and returned home around 11:30 a.m. Shortly thereafter, he became unreachable, prompting immediate concern. A group of acquaintances gathered at the Welles residence to search for him, and his grandmother, Patricia "Pat" Strader, reported him missing to authorities.
