A Mother and Son Vanish from Wetumpka

Susan Lynn Osborne and her teenage son, Evan Eric Chartrand, disappeared from the Wetumpka, Alabama, area during Memorial Day weekend in 2017, beginning a mystery that has remained unresolved for years. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency lists Susan's missing-person case as active under case number 170700822 and states that Susan and Evan left their residence on May 29, 2017, and never returned. Their direction of travel was unknown. The Elmore County Sheriff's Office also continues to list both Susan and Evan among its missing persons. Susan was described by the state as a white woman with blue eyes, blonde or strawberry-colored hair, approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing about 120 pounds.

A Life in Alabama Far from Much of Her Family

Susan was originally from Michigan, according to later news coverage. She moved to Alabama while married to Evan's father, and after that marriage ended, she remained in the state and shared custody of Evan. Susan subsequently remarried and was living with her second husband at a home on Waterview Drive in the Wetumpka area when she and Evan disappeared. Much of Susan's extended family remained outside Alabama, which meant phone calls, messages and FaceTime conversations were an important part of maintaining those relationships. Her sister-in-law, Melissa Canfield, later told WSFA that she regularly communicated with Susan and Evan and that nothing appeared unusual during a conversation roughly two weeks before they vanished.
