A Promising Life Cut Short

Kristin Denise Smart was born on February 20, 1977, in Augsburg, West Germany, to American parents Stan and Denise Smart, who were teachers for children of U.S. military personnel. Raised in Stockton, California, Kristin was known for her vibrant personality, athleticism, and aspirations in communications. In 1995, she enrolled at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) in San Luis Obispo, eager to embark on her college journey.

The Night of Disappearance

On May 25, 1996, during Memorial Day weekend, Kristin attended an off-campus party near the Cal Poly campus. Around 2 a.m., she was found passed out on a neighbor's lawn by fellow students Cheryl Anderson and Tim Davis. They began assisting her back to her dormitory when another student, Paul Flores, joined them. Due to the proximity of his dorm, Flores offered to take Kristin the rest of the way. This was the last time Kristin was seen alive.

Initial Investigation and Delays

Campus police initially suspected Kristin had gone on an unannounced trip, a common occurrence among students during holidays. This assumption led to a delay in reporting her as missing to local law enforcement. It wasn't until a week later that the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office took over the investigation.

Paul Flores: The Prime Suspect
